Why is Business Continuity so important?

Business Continuity is an organization’s ability to maintain essential functions during and after a disaster occurs.

At a time when downtime is unacceptable, business continuity is critical. Nowadays, downtime can come from a variety of sources, such as cyberattacks, extreme weather or pandemics. Therefore, companies require a plan that enables them to keep running at a minimal level whenever disruptions occur.

Business continuity features clear guidelines for what an organisation must do to maintain operations. When it comes the time to respond, there should be no doubt about how to proceed with business procedures. The organization, its customers, and staff are all at risk.

The International Organization for Standardization has published a management system standard that specifies requirements to plan, implement, monitor, and continuously improve a documented management system to reduce the likelihood of occurrence and/or recover from disruptive incidents when they arise. This standard corresponds to ISO 22301:2019, Security and resilience – Business Continuity management systems – Requirements.
